La'Var Howell Named Cox Charities Community Hero

Parma, OH – As part of its commitment to celebrating employee contributions to the communities where they live and work, Cox Communications has recognized La’Var Howell as its Community Hero in Cleveland for 2019. Mr. Howell has devoted his time to USO Northern in Cleveland by helping veterans reacclimate to civilian life and through initiatives designed to support active military overseas.

Volunteers play an important role at USO Northern. Namely, they provide direct comfort to the service members from northern Ohio. Volunteers provide refreshments at unit homecoming or deployment functions or serve beverages and snacks at USO run canteens or lounges. These are the personal touches that boost morale and fortify the feeling that local defenders of freedom are supported on the home front by the public.

Mr. Howell, who resides in Cleveland, has supported USO Northern’s mission by not only providing counsel and support to returning veterans, but also by donating care packages to support men and women currently overseas. Mr. Howell has further supported the organization by speaking with youth who are interested in pursuing careers in the military and sharing his own experiences as a veteran.  Due to his efforts, USO Northern will receive a $3,000 Cox Charities Grant to ensure its positive impact on veterans and their families continues to grow.

“Our employees are as committed to their communities as they are to keeping our customers completely satisfied,” said Jay Allbaugh, senior vice president and region manager, Cox Communications. “They give of themselves freely to serve the needs of deserving community organizations, and we are honored to recognize their generosity and selflessness as part of the Cox Charities Community Hero program.”

Since 2001, Cox Communications has awarded more than $600,000 in Cox Charities grants and in-kind support on behalf of their employee’s volunteer efforts in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Ohio.
