Woman Up - Get Your Mammogram!

Ladies: It's time to take control of your health. Woman Up to prevent and beat breast cancer. Women 40 and older should receive an annual mammogram, according to Sherry Hillier, MD, a radiologist at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center. Dr. Hillier also advocates for the added specificity of tomosynthesis, an advanced 3-D digital imaging for early detection of breast cancer. UH was the first health care provider in Northern Ohio to offer tomosynthesis. This technology is available locally at UH Parma Medical Center's Outpatient Center.

According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, 3D mammography finds significantly more invasive cancers and reduces unnecessary recalls.

"I recommend tomosynthesis to everybody," says Dr. Hillier. "It's wonderful."

Tomosynthesis provides 3-D views of the breast, visually slicing through the breast tissue to gain a more accurate view of the tissue. This technology is particularly recommended for women with dense breasts and can reduce recall rates for additional imaging – and thus reducing anxiety for patients.

"Mammogram is your first line of defense against breast cancer," says Dr. Hillier. "And at any time of the year, if you feel something new or different, an unusual lump, talk to your doctor and get a mammogram."
